Title: Padlock is missing something
Post by: colej on February 19, 2011, 03:22:27 PM
I've been working on it for hours and just can't seem to get the appearance of the padlock body just right. any suggestion?

A couple of suggestions - try reducing the tessellation figure when you export to Keyshot from your CAD package, as the hoop looks a bit polygonal. Also, try upping the roughness of the hoop and the keys as these are subject to wear and tear in real life.

Put very small radii on every edge.
In reality, very few surfaces have actually sharp edges.
Small 0.010" radii on every edge will create transitions across the surfaces and reflect light.

The padlock is pretty plain.
Add a logo to the body.
Use car paint + texture to get more depth out of the surfaces.

The image also need some contrast along with everything else that has been suggested. Keep up the hard work.
Good Luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'll mod the tesselation, add some kind of logo and spice up the material for the next iteration.

sometimes it all comes together with little effort easy, sometimes the easy comes to hard.
