Title: shadows more descriptive?
Post by: fario on May 14, 2012, 08:45:35 AM
hello,

how to be more descriptive of the shadows?

example: the shadow of the geode. The shadow is too flat.

with a cutout on the sharper edges.

I try to put a lamp, an object emissivity for this but to no avail.

thank you in advance.

Antoine

Is it possible to implement a setting function of shadows?

for example: three factors of hardness of the shadow.

In order to have soft or hard shadows.

thank you

You will need to use an environment with a much smaller and more intense light source. Try the hdri-locations_urban_4k environment which has a clear sky with a bright son. This should produce a sharp shadow.

yes indeed, the shadows are harder with your example.

but...:

I like to know why the pictures with hdri landscape, generate shadows harder, please.

This is how real lighting works. A small bright light source produces sharp shadows (like a spot light, or the sun), while large, softer light sources produce soft shadows (such as the large panels in the studio lighting environments).

Jeff is right, that's how it should work. Play around with the different environments and watch how they affect the shadows. In a few minutes you will understand the importance of choosing the right environment for the look you want.

Yes, it's a very good idea that into next Version of Keyshot, we have two options : smooth and sharp shadows.
But not exclusively with hdri but in interior renderings too, with emissive materials (lamps) for example.
