Title: Problems and Bugs while Importing Geometry
Post by: Varaga on May 06, 2015, 12:50:18 AM
I made a scene with 3ds max, some models in that scene need displacement so the scene becomes very heavy and I cant export all in one .bip file. So I decided to import them in keyshot separately, but the parts are being imported in the scene in weird places, please dont ask to try unchecking "snap to ground" and all that, I tried everything. Then I thought I would export the scene in one .bip file but wiithout the displacement on the models, then export the parts of the scenes with displacement on the models separately and update the geometry. But when I tried that, keyshot crashed on me. again, please dont suggest me to try using different options, doesnt work.

OS: Windows 7 64bit
Keyhost version : 5.2.10
Im exporting from 3ds max with keyshot plugin

FBX is smaller than OBJ but otherwise we can't suggest anything else as per your instructions :P

;D ;D I said do not suggest anything to do inside the import window, other than that any suggestions would be very welcome. Actually I found a workaround. after importing all the parts, I need to correct the angles in position tab of the scene window. But there must be a way to import a mesh and not handfix the position in the viewport.

QuoteI need to correct the angles in position tab of the scene window

Is the Axis incorrect on import ? If so, then change UP Axis on the KeyShot importer  to suit Max.

I'm using keyshots plugin for 3ds max so I supposed that the plugin would take care about the axis issue, neverethless I tried all the axises in import window, even the minus ones just in case, brings in wrong places, than I have to fix them in positions window. What about the importing bug that I mentioned in my first post?

Well that's just totally weird ... If you export as FBX and import that into KeyShot do you still get the same problems or is it just literally the plugin that's having the problem. I am lost for an answer, and as I am a Mac user I can't install Max to test it here.

I mentioned that I export .bip from 3ds max as its the native format of keyshot, not .fbx. If I need to export .fbx files from 3ds max to use with keyshot, then why to use the plugin at all? I suppose the plugins purpose is to add a format (.bip) in 3ds max export dialog box.

I read what you wrote about exporting as *.BIP all I was trying to clarify is if it only fails with the BIP export or if the problem was occurring in other formats too. My apologies if this seems to offend you

No Martin, I'm not offended at all, sorry if I seemed rude. I didnt try fbx format just because I thought that the plugin works with .bip format. I will try with .fbx tomorrow but I dont think it will do any better than the .bip.

Just trying to narrow things down for you. FBX should bring the Max camera with it. If everything comes in clean and in place with no positional errors then it could possibly suggest that the problem area is related to camera/viewport translation with the plugin.

Also what version of Max are you running, if it's the latest 2016 version it's possible that the plugin does not support it properly yet and the dev team might be waiting for the KS6 release before addressing any plugin issues that may well be present with AutoDesk 2016 releases.

bip also brings the camera from 3ds max, I'm using 3ds max 2015.
I did some quick search and it seems that the crashing (when updating geometry in keyshot import) happened in earlier keyshot releases too so its not a new bug. Like about a year or two ago.
Thanks Martin for at least trying to help. I will try exporting fbx tomorrow and will post here.

Is there an example you can share that causes the crash so we can test this here?

yes I just made a cylinder in max, exported in low poly, than I smoothed that same cylinder in max, exported that again. So I opened the low poly one in keyshot, assigned a simple plastic material, then I imported the high poly one with update the geometry and it crashed. So its not just that particular scene that I was talking yesterday that's crashing.

here's the .bip files of the high and low poly cylinders as you wanted
