Title: Scaling/Importing issues
Post by: jhiker on November 13, 2015, 08:22:23 AM
I'm using the recently released KS v6 and the way it scales models on import baffles me, to be honest.
I opened two scenes separately and made sure the scene units in both were set to mm. I saved both files and closed KS.

I then opened one of the files and imported the other one into it - see screenshot.

Although both models show a scale=1 in the scene tree they cannot both be right.
The upper assembly is supposed to be just a little bit bigger than the rectangular shape in the lower highlight box. I've modelled these parts myself and I know them to be correct.
It's not a distance/perspective thing - it really is that much bigger.

Frankly, the scaling/importing thing in Keyshot has always baffled me and causes me continual frustration. It seems no better in version 6.

If I might be doing something wrong or missing something I'm happy to have that pointed out, but I don't know what more I can do except make sure the scene units match in both models before I do the import.

Which format are you importing? Most CAD software provides the units and we respect those in KeyShot. File formats such as obj do not have units and it has to be specified on import.

It would be STP or BIP - I'll have to go back and check.
Should it be possible to 'mix' the two types?
I'll let you know.

I did a further test today. Opened an assembly in Geomagic (Alibre) and saved it as both a BIP file and a STP file.
Opened  Keyshot then 'File - Open' and navigated to the BIP file. At this point Keyshot gave me the 'Keyshot Import' tab where I could choose 'add to scene' or 'new geometry'. I don't remember earlier versions doing this, I think Keyshot just opened it without the dialogue tab. Is this expected behaviour?
Anyway, it came in OK.
I then repeated the exercise with a STP file and some of the parts appear to be displaced - see pic.
It doesn't matter whether I opened this file as 'new geometry' or 'add to scene', the parts were always displaced.
The scale appears to be the same.
So far, I have not noticed 'displaced parts' on other assemblies but I haven't been using KS v6 for very long.
Incidentally, if I double-click on the BIP file in explorer KS will open it straight away, without the 'Keyshot Import' tab.
