Title: Material templates - is this how they should work?
Post by: jhiker on May 13, 2016, 06:12:16 AM
I'm using the latest KS6 beta with Geomagic (formerly Alibre).
I thought I knew how to use Material Templates but now I'm not so sure. I have certainly used them successfully many times in the past with the Keyshot/Geomagic combination but I'm having difficulty now and I don't know why.
Let's say I finish a 3D model in CAD and export it as a STP (or a BIP, doesn't seem to matter) and save it somewhere.
I then load it into Keyshot and apply materials to everything. I can see from the scene tree that all the parts have materials allocated.
I then go over to the left-hand pane and the 'Material Templates' tab click on the '+' arrow at the top and 'Add Template - Automatic - Part'
A template is created but there's only two items (parts) in the list - see pic.
If I look at any of my 'old' material templates created in KS5 or KS4 I can see they are fully populated.
I need to know how to get Matl Templates to work again....

EDIT: I opened the model again in CAD and sent it through to KShot with the 'render' icon on the tool ribbon. This time I was able to allocate materials and generate a 'full' template.

Is this how it's supposed to work?

The STEP file, in most cases, will not have any materials or material names stored. Therefore you will only end up with one entry in the template. If you have a STEP file then you will need to do it by part name to get proper results when using material templates.

You mean 'Add Template - Automatic - Part' - that's what I did.
