Looking to see how I can achieve this effect but nothing yet. I've attached an example of a real world halo lit channel lettering.(http://anaheimsigns.com/images/20_construction/halo-lighted-letters.jpg) Do you guys have any suggestions?
I would make two sets of letters, one behind the other. Apply an area light to the set of letters that you want to glow. Make sure global illumination is turned on and the building will be illuminated by the lights. Then, in your image tab, increase the bloom to get the glow effect.
How do I apply an area light? Do I create a geometric shape and apply 'Area Light Diffuse'?

Yes, but the light will be applied to the surface of your geometry... so you need another sign. For example, Have 2 signs, one in front of another, then apply the light material to the one behind it. Just like it's done in real life. They have physical lights in the shape of the sign behind each letter. (more or less)
You could do this by duplicating the sign in KeyShot and use the move tool to offset them. You can even use the position tab under the Scene Tree to scale the duplicate to make it thinner so it fits nicely between the sign and the wall/building.
