Yeah, I've gone down the modeling rabbit hole before too and came up with some strange stuff. I want to imagine this as some sort of medieval steampunk waffle maker.

Strap a hide over it and it can be an old tribal drum! Nice looking material. Kinda moisty bony-ish, if that makes sense.
Well, as a lifelong collector and user of antique tools, I know exactly what this is. It's one of those. It's used for a lot of things.
Seriously, I love it! Sometimes you just have to let the juices flow and see where they take you. Great materials!
It could even be a "warrior shield", as the crosses would play havoc on an opponent's blade!
