Title: Another "Rendering Flat Art"
Post by: Speedster on August 07, 2011, 10:18:57 AM
As usual, Egon has blown our socks off with another creative and original trick in his post on "Rendering Flat Art" http://keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=2210.0 (http://keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=2210.0)!

My wife Geri is a professional sculptor specializing in medals, and often needs to show renderings to a client for approval.  So Egon's idea was a great possibility.  To test it, I applied a jpeg of her 2008 Barack Obama Presidential Inaugural Medal and dropped it on to a simple SolidWorks disc.   I created a normal map in FilterForge from her jpeg and dropped it in.

Bingo!  So cool!  Thanks, Egon!  Sometime I'll try it with line art.

Very cool.  No need to make a time consuming model when you can get fast results like that.  Thanks Egon & Speedster.

And when animation arrives, you can flip the coin!

Fast?  You'd better believe it!  All done in about 10 minutes!  Oh ya- "coins" are those little flat, low relief, things you carry in your pocket and that used to be worth something.  Medals are usually large, high relief, and created by artists.  Geri's medal is 3.250" in diameter.
