Title: More Cores or Faster Clock Speed?
Post by: Kinetic Vision on July 10, 2012, 10:46:03 AM
I apologize for this post here, but I figured this community was the most knowledgeable about this subject. I'd like some advice regarding a laptop purchase. Which of the below CPU's would have the better performance in KeyShot, and by what approximate margin?

3rd gen Intel Core i7-3612QM quad-core processor (2.10GHz / 3.10GHz with Turbo Boost)
3rd gen Intel Core i7-3520M processor (2.90GHz / 3.60GHz with Turbo Boost)

Thanks,

Rick

I would say that with the i7-3612 you will get a performance increase anywhere from 45%-70%, depending on whether you utilize the Turbo Boost or not.

Here are some quick specs from CPUBenchmarks website, comparing the two.

Mr. Teger - thank you for your comment. How do I activate TurboBoost and why not always use it?

Thanks again,

Rick

Not really sure about how to activate it. It may be in the BIOS settings? And yes, why would you not always use it? I would.

I did a bit of research and it's supposed to happen automatically when there is a high load on the cores, either individually or as a group.
Thanks again for your input.
