Title: making lenses authentic
Post by: mikalind on January 21, 2014, 12:15:59 AM
Hi

Any tips on how to make the lenses in cameras look more authentic.
I have tried to use solid glass and double sided glass, and then put a sphere with the material thin film inside but it still looks kinda dead.

Camera lenses are often made of many elements of different lense types, each likely with different types of glass with varying IOR's and some likely with special coatings.

See for example a Leica lense cut in half below.

I think to get a more accurate looking lense in your render, model at least two or three lense elements (perhaps you can download some somewhere! then take the front face of the lense and do a minute offset to create a second surface just in front of the lense. To this you can apply the Thin Film material type in Keyshot (use maybe two with varying thicknesses.

Then with all those layers of glass it's probably required to increase the number of ray bounces in the settings as well.
