Title: Issues related to caustics?
Post by: hugo on May 14, 2014, 11:05:53 AM
I've been experimenting with caustics, (pic3) of this attachment contains some questions?

1. This Scene contains a Pool with front wall removed, the pool is tiled inside, with 3 objects float in the pool: Sphere, Cube, and Angelfish (pic1)
2. Check marking: Water volume in the Scene; turn on Water volume. (pic2)
3. Questions of interest (pic3)

The tiles not obeying perspective where simply a reflection in a surface of the water volume.[/li][/list]
Thanks for your input Dries, There is in reality a lot of going on when it comes to water and reflections, its one of those things we rarely observe, unless your a keen observer. In fact there are indeed subtle reflections from the surface of the water. Mostly those observation are made from above the water plane, since most of us have never look at underwater illuminated reflections.

Here are some actual pictures of how caustics and reflections behave in water with sunlight.

subtle observations:

- dispersion of sunlight on water surface.
- the slight curvature of each glass tile at the bottom of the pool reflects light.
- reflection of floating pool chlorinater.
- reflection of siding in pool water.
- pool tiles under water, along pool wall appear rectangular not square, due to index of refraction of water.

These are some of the difficult issues Rendering Software Programmers have to try to imitate.... this not an easy task.
It appears the folks at Chaosgroup have a lot more work to do then at KS. (see last pic)

cheers!
