Title: Can't get nice gold color. Will pay $100 for professional result
Post by: keyshnoob on September 16, 2014, 10:44:21 AM
Hi all,

I'm having a hard time with gold colors in Keyshot. I have a flat pendant and I can't give it any texture.
So I thought that I'd pay $100 via Paypal to someone who can get the result I want and show me how to do it.

I attach 3 files
- the result I want
- The result I have with my model
- the Rhino model

If someone is interested, please let me know

Thank you

PS sorry for the double post but I kept getting "no data" responses

This is a pretty tough problem, mostly because you're model will be "too perfect" to give those results. When the metal is polished, the edges end up basically sanded down a bit. This causes the front to actually not be flat, so gives a more soft feel. But you can't really do that easily in Rhino. It's a bit easier with poly data, but it's still some manual labor.

Also the color isn't the problem. It's the environment (which is the lighting). The image you want uses a square light tent. There are plenty of environments like that. Use one that is a photo, not computer generated. Those subtle fabric wrinkles will help with some subtle distress as well, adding some softness to the image, but you'll need to get that right in the model. That's the biggest part.
This is also probably why no one is really biting on the 100 bucks. I'd probably have done it, but seeing the model, I recognized you wouldn't be happy with the end results.

Hi Andy and thank you for your answer,

Yes I realize that the inside edges are too sharp, even though I spend a huge amount of time filletting those edges in Rhino (huge Rhino weak point btw imo)
The pendant on the sample pic has more relief, especially since it is a cast piece, whereas mine is hand cut, so only the outside edges get rounded by polishing.

I will try to fillet them even more to get me light bounce..
And I will definitely try to find a square light tent environment. Do you have any idea where I can find one?

However I still feel that the gold color in Keyshot is off (looks a little green), or that there should a simple color tone adjustment slider in there to deal with it.

I was thinking of raising my offer to $200, but I understand your point and it might not solve my problem.

Thank anyway

Hi

I agree with Andy. The gold color highly depends on the lightning (environment).
The new procedural curvature available with KS5 helps to add more relief on the metal.

I made a quick test. First I made a copy of your pendant and thanks to _FlowAlongsrf command I applied some camber to the copy. (Flat pendant on the left, curved on the right)
Then I used the standard 18K gold material and added some procedural curvature.

See the results with / without the procedural curvature

HDR is available on KS Cloud.

There is more depth on the first example so more shadow contrast is seen, therefore more interest and realism for the same lighting and material?

Yes the sample pendant is definitely much easier to work with as there is much more depth.
I cannot change the fundamentals of my piece, so maybe I should give it a slight angle.

Anyway I have made some progress in the color and the lighting and I actually now think that I will get there eventually.

Merci beacoup Arnaud pour ton aide, je suis en train d'ameliorer la couleur et je suis assez pres de ce que je recherche la
