Title: Reset measurement units to "1"
Post by: Winch Doctor on April 17, 2015, 08:50:49 AM
Basically, I'd like to be able to resize a model with the move tool (sometimes drastically), and then reset all its measurements to now be considered "1", without changing the size or location of the object. Great for importing one Keyshot model into another without having to worry much about which one uses what measurements. Just eyeball it, then reset measurements.

It looks like each group of objects has its own size/location settings, which is fine. When I click on my group of objects to highlight them, I select the "position" tab below that and see the scale, rotation, and translation all set to 1. However, the model I imported was microscopic in comparison with what was already onscreen. I resized it as needed, and its "scale" became 0.00005. Now all textures applied to it from the existing model have to be scaled waaay down, and trying to move it with the tool causes it to either jump wildly, or barely move at all depending on which direction we're going.

Rather than having to delete and re-import with different settings (while figuring out which is using what measurements etc. etc.), I'd like to have a "reset measurements to 1" setting. This will update all of its current position, scale, and rotation settings to now be considered "1", without changing the size of the model. Scale increments will likewise reset to whatever is standard.

Slightly OT but may be related.
I am puzzled at the scale at which models sometimes import. I can generate a CAD model and save it as a BIP, open it in Keyshot and save the scene. If I then alter the CAD model save it as a different-named BIP and import that into the original scene it can come in at some miniscule scale and I don't know why. I quite often have to alter the scale to '1' manually in order to see it.
I'm using Geomagic - formerly Alibre.

@jhiker - Alibre is still using the old API from almost 5 years ago. This works much more reliable now.

@winch doctor - what version of KeyShot are you using?

Hi Thomas - thanks for that.
Would I get better results if I save from GM/Alibre as a step file and import that into Keyshot rather than exporting a BIP?
Many thanks

Yes. As long as you are running a version that is not the "Alibre" version (sorry, forgot what version you actually run).

Use "Keep Original" upon import ("automatic" import will go away in KeyShot 6) and you are golden.

Thanks for the tip - I have the v5.2 'Pro' version of KS not the bundled version.

Great. I hope that 3DSystems will update the plugin soon so you finally can take advantage of the latest and greatest enhancements, in particular live linking.

I import the standard "plane" object that comes with keyshot all the time, and stretch the dimensions to create a plane that matches what I need it for, usually a long, narrow plane to represent plastic packaging strap. When I use "move" on this new plane, the tool behaves erratically, making my plane jump across the screen when I move the mouse even one pixel. In this case, I'd use the reset units feature, or maybe the move tool just needs some adjustments.

I opened a support ticket with Geomagic/3DS about their use of an old API and was told it was forwarded as an enhancement request to Development. Maybe if everyone who uses Geomagic/Keyshot were to open a ticket about the old API it may get some priority.

Sadly, it seems that any news I've seen from 3DS has to do with 3d printing and not much about updating their CAD software.

I'm using Keyshot 5.3. No clue what you guys are talking about, but does anyone else experience the above mentioned move tool problem?

Well, I had a reply from GM support and they told me to use this version of KS
http://support1.geomagic.com/link/portal/5605/5668/Article/2655/KeyShot-for-3D-Systems
but that's the 'bundled version' surely...
I have the Pro version bought from KS. I'm confused now.
