In another program I have created a primitive plane plus sphere.
When I import it into Keyshot, I assign an area light to the sphere thus creating a
"light".
After I finish lighting the scene, I wish to save my newly created light as an object
in Keyshot to use again.
Besides saving it as a scene file, is there a way to save it ( and others of the same type)
within the program itself?

You can put your .bip in the Models folder.
After that, you can choose it in Menu > Edit > choose a geometry
