Title: Candle Flame Test
Post by: bdesign on July 27, 2016, 09:54:30 PM
A little test attempt at trying to achieve a fairly convincing candle flame material/subtle movement within KeyShot. Post production with Photoshop.

Very, very cool (well, hot really ;) ) indeed as well as convincing Eric - I don't think people realise how difficult this is to achieve, definitely KeyShot Facebook fodder in my book...

Thanks very much, John! If it convinces you, then I feel pretty confident I achieved what I was going for :). When I began experimenting, I was trying out rendering both the flame motion and the "dancing" light motion on the floor/within the SSS, inside of keyShot, but quickly realized that rendering out individual frames of the Translucent wax material was gonna take forever. So I ended up rendering the flame motion animation separately against a black background, a static "beauty" image of the candle and floor (no flame), and a static floor-only candlelight pass (HDR off), then compositing and simulating the light motion on the floor and within the SSS by animating the opacity of a few adjustment layers in Photoshop. I also rendered out a separate, additional, static specular-only pass for the wax to slightly enhance the form of the candle. And finally, once fairly happy with the result, I looped the entire thing a few times.

Cheers,
Eric

Fantastic! This is totally cool. For me, this is a perfect Halloween animation. Thanks for sharing a breakdown. The last time I tried rendering a candle and flame, I abandoned ship before getting a decent result.

Thanks very much, Will! I think the most difficult part was actually getting a decent combination of Color Gradient nodes for the flame material. Thanks again!

Cheers,
Eric
