Title: UNDERSTANDING HOW KEYSHOT TREATS THE MONITOR VS. THE IMAGE DOCUMENT SIZE
Post by: Artbot on September 29, 2016, 12:48:28 PM
I need some advice about setting up and positioning my 3D objects within the Keyshot space. First a little background. I got to a point where my scene in ZBrush was way too large data-wise. It was straining my programs and system as well. So I am now dividing the mesh elements up into several documents and I have added registration marks in the four corners of each to keep consistent points of reference to eventually be able to line them all up in Photoshop. All my Keyshot documents are set up orthographic and I locked the camera within a custom 2 x 3 ratio. What I don't understand though about Keyshot is the following: I understand where in Photoshop the corners of the document end because I can see the rectangle shape and I can zoom in and out. But when I zoom in and out in Keyshot, It makes my mesh objects bigger or smaller, but my viewing are never changes so I can't see the document corners. I may do doing something wrong, but in any case I need help. My tests, so far, I can successfully align different files (in PS), but some are larger than others and I need then to scale to match, I am trying to use as much screen real estate as I can and get as much pixel info as I can also, but I also want to see my entire image before I render.  Thanks!

I don't use or know ZBrush, but KeyShot. Scrolling moves the camera. You'll see that action in geometry view window. So if ZB has a different focal length (even in ortographic) it will could be difficult to match the renderings.
Try to match the focal length and import the meshes with origin position as ZB has set.

I hope that would help a bit (or you can share some simple examples?!)

Thanks. But to be clear I am not trying to match my Zbrush renderings with Keyshot renderings. I experimented with that for several weeks but no longer-- I am moving on. I'm solely focused on matching Keyshot renderings to other Keyshot renderings. My question's focus above Is about filling the document size exactly the same each time, and also being able to see and understand the parameters of the Keyshot document image size.

Without testing it ('cause I'm on a journey) I guess it should be possible.
- use ortographic view (as seen above)
- set e.g. the camera to front view
- use CTRL+ALT+RMB on the nearest mesh point to the camera. Now you can define a precise distance between the camera a the render objects. And I guess that if the distance is the same in every KS project, then the renders will match in scale.

The rest is just a question of render resolution.

Hope that helps
