Title: Into the wild ( + Palm trees silhouette)
Post by: Hossein Alfideh on November 11, 2016, 06:17:24 AM
Hello my friends,
lately I have started doing some nature shots and would like to share with you.as the modeling process takes a long time  :-X I'll share them one by one.
here is the first one.an old wooden boat alone floating for weeks where everything stands still, there are some ongoing activities somewhere near quietly ... so I call this shot deadly silence  :D
let me know what you think, hope you like it

Wow man ! Your work has improved a LOT. Your last images looked very realistic. Only thing i have to say about this one is that if that paddle is submerged i don't think it would be that visible. That kind of water is darker beneath the surface i think. Keep rocking !

Thanks a ton Nico, I really appreciate it dude  ;)
Didn't think of that, you're 100% right, I'll do that and replace the image. Thanks again!  :)

Great render Hossein,  love everything, only crits would be what Nico said re: the paddle and the water 'splash' is too uniform somehow, a little turbulence is needed I think :)

I could also think of a back story as to what's happening here but I cannot say in this thread ;)

Personally I think you're pretty darn close here. The misty layer tends to suggest there is no breeze, and it has that autumnal feeling about it. The lack of a breeze means no disturbance to the clear cool waters of the lake. A lake that is full of deep water oxygenators and the sedge/reeds would clear that water to be glass like. I have seen many a lake with water as clean as mountain springs. The whole effect would indeed leave an eerie silence.

There is still lots that can be done here, lower camera angle to offer better scene depth, early sun rise coloured sky to add that early morning chill feeling whilst giving that warm glow that you can feel on your skin etc. So yeah I like this a lot and can see lots of ways of working this scene, a truly reusable environmental asset!

so, here is my update ...
early morning sky, changes in the camera angel and a bit darker water, also some birds flying in a distance
let me know your Ideas  :)
Title: Re: Into the wild
Post by: TpwUK on November 12, 2016, 08:29:43 PM
I prefer the early morning sky, adding the flock of birds works too. Dropping the transparency of the water has lost the tranquility of the scene and made it a dark foreboding lake that has an almost oil slick type of appearance. Which is great if that's the effect you're after. Lakes are a difficult subject... Lower camera angles give less transparency but more surface reflections. Higher angles and you get the opposite, so then you need water movement as in waves or flowing water to disrupt the transparency and refraction .... It's really awkward to put into words. But if you stand at a lakes edge and look down towards your feet you will have more transparency to the water than if you look out to the horizon where the reflections and any movement plus angle of refraction etc all disrupt the transparency to almost zero.

It might also pay to have a strong pin light that's set somewhere between 4.1K to 5.5K to give that golden light. Creating environments is not easy with KS so you have given yourself a painful project, but one that's certainly worth it :)

Hi Hossein.

Very interesting project!
I don't much to add from what has already been said, except that I probably would try to move those birds a bit to the left to avoid centering everything composition-wise.

:)

Title: Re: Into the wild (the boat - updated)
Post by: TpwUK on November 13, 2016, 12:08:51 PM
It's getting there ... Are you using Translucency on the sedge reeds ? If so push the subsurface colour to a more yellow/green, you may have to bump up the translucency value to get the yellow glow coming through some more. Also add a hint of yellow to the mist if you can, the low angle of the sun would throw a yellow hint if it was a warm autumn kind of morning, else go to the blue spectrum for cold wintery type of light. Play with it, you should get that gut instinct when it's right.

on this one I have increased the translucency up to 2.3 ,changed the subsurface colour into yellow and some changes in the mist

Fabulous image.  I wonder though if the ripple is too much or too detailed.  Also, I feel like the texture of the distressed wood on the boat could be a bit more.  Very inspiring image!

It's looking great Hossein, I think it's going to be pretty much there with some tweaking of brightness and contrast, it's just missing that strong clean light. Might be a post task ...

Thanks Mike, yeah I know that actually did that on purpose cuz what I had on mind was the water is steady with no waves so ripple looks a bit detailed.

Nice. Moving the birds was a good call :)

Have you thought of adding a slight glow coming from the right to enhance the feeling of the sun, and maybe adding some subtle vignetting to help create focus on the boat? (Both in i.e. photoshop)

Now it's singing Hossein - Well done!!
Play some more and see if you can get a better result, the base is now solid. Just try things like a denser mist, more samples, gamma, longer render time etc etc, these things are just suggestions - That last render you posted is already outstanding and you may have already hit the scenes sweet spot, so it's definitely a keeper :)

Hi all,
I'd like to share my latest work now,an unfinished bridge!my concept was a little inspired by the Last of us video game.there are so many cool locations and really cool atmosphere everywhere when you play it.so I wanted to go for that golden sun light on the poisonous mist which has rendered the air unbreathable.
All thanks to Eric Brock for helping me to understand how to get cool results using Volumetric mist.
a little noise on the mist was intended.
tell me your ideas.hope you like it.  :)

Very cool concept. I think you could push it so it reads a bit better. The wood slats for the bridge look too thin I think. Also, maybe a slightly less over-head shot? Not sure what it is but it reads a little bit flat to me. Maybe more contrast/direction in the sunlight?

Thanks alot Will for taking a look.the whole bridge is made of bamboo and that's why those slats are thin.I tried to apply what you said and here is my result.  :)

For me this works a whole lot better. Easier to understand and more settling composition. Nice work.

That last one is remarkable ! This could easily be a Rip Curl or Billabong ad !

Looks like a photo! I'd turn the heavy color grading down a notch, but that's just a matter of personal preference. Definitely got lots of mood.
