Title: About to buy Keyshot, but ...
Post by: sam_1209 on May 21, 2017, 11:25:49 PM
the only thing that is still holding me back is the temperature issue. Older posts mention that Keyshot takes the cores to 100%, resulting in quite high temperatures.
Now, I don't need Keyshot for intensive renders of animations, just scene setups and general lighting. The computer that will run this software is a macbook pro 2015. I've blown an older  iMac  before by running it on high temperature during renders, so I'm very hesitant and this is a go/no go issue for me. Since only older posts mention this temperature issue, has this situation improved?
Finally, does restricting the number of cores used by keyshot lower the temperature?

Thanks!

You can control the number of cores that are being pushed, therefore limiting the temp rises. I have a macbook pro as well, and I have used KS on it, but I limited it to half the available cores. The fans still did kick in high, and sounded like the thing was going to start hovering off the desk, but the temps stayed within acceptable ranges.

I would think this strategy would be ok to use, but beware it won't last long on battery either if the cores are really cranking.

Thank you for the information and I'll limit the cores.

I use my laptop to do look dev on small images, setup materials and views, animations and such. Then I package it and send it to my work machine or home PC for the final render. There are render farms you can utilize too, pretty modest pricing for final renders. and fast turnaround.

Sounds like the perfect workflow for me. Thanks again  :D

No problem! Anything to help fellow mac user stay on the platform :) I love my mac, but the PC horsepower has won me over for any heavy lifting.
