Hi. I love the glass and the ring. Those two are the best of this set in my opinion. Really nice scenes and moods.

Hey there Jon! Quite a collection you have there. So glad to see your work here. I like them all - it's hard to pick a favorite, but I really like the vintage bulb shot.

Some more renderings I have done in the past few months for practice. Glad to hear you guys like some of my work. I always appreciate feedback, good or bad.

That body scrub macro shot and the interior shot are some of the best I've seen. Well-done!

Very nice mood. Looks cozy.
I really like how you framed the shot with showing the arc of the entrance.

However, a carpet in the kitchen doesn't seem like the best idea in the world. :)

Understandable Dries, but I was surprised to see so many of the farmhouse style kitchens have long runners in them, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I didn't do anything too special, the way I've heard that Interior Mode works best is with an enclosed area that lets the light bounce around the room. I did however leave one opening, and that is the arched doorway you see in the foreground of the final render. But besides that, you can see the attachments below for my setup. It's basically the Forrest Road HDRI with a large pin light to let the light flood in through the windows of the kitchen. Then I turn down the contrast a bit and turn up the brightness, just to give the appearance of an overall lighting, instead of having sharp shadows. It all depends on the look you are going for. But this is what I wanted from this concept.

Besides that, there is no other light source. However there are 5 sets of windows/doors that allow a lot of light to come in. You can see them all on the exterior in the last screenshot.

I've only done Interior Mode shots a handful of times, so I may not have the best technique, but that's generally how I handle it.

Thanks for all the detail.. what PC you rendering on?

I bought a PC from Boxx recently to help with my rendering since I work from home now.
It has an 8 core - Intel i7-7820X Processor at 3.6GHz (this makes 16 cores in Keyshot)
32 gigs DDR4 RAM
2gb NVIDIA Quadro P600 Graphics card

From what I've talked to the support team at Luxion about; rendering is all about the amount of cores. I wanted to buy something with more, but it starts getting pricey, and I'm still young.

Cool cool, the render I set for a Timed render of 3 hours and threw it in a queue with a bunch of other renders and left it over night, It looked good enough when I saw it the next morning, so that's what I kept. Then I did some minor Photoshop adjustments.

I'm looking at a couple of Threadripper boxes for tossing on the network here at work. They seem to be the way to go, all they would be is for rendering, run headless, shove them in a rack mount and pound them hard with Keyshot XR renders. I'm looking for reasons NOT to go the Threadripper route, but  Its hard finding reasons not to. I'm waiting a bit to see what my budget is, and if the threadrippers die off after being run at 100% for 6 months.

Sorry I haven't got back to you on this. But, no, I did't add any Area Light Panels anywhere, the scene is lit strictly from the HDRI.

Yep, most of the lighting comes from the HDRI. There are lights inside the chandelier and pendant bulbs, but they don't add a whole lot to the overall lighting.

Yes, using interior mode, the room is almost closed, except for a doorway that is behind the camera. Some light comes in through there as well, but only what is coming from the back of the HDRI.

Thanks Bill, I liked the vantage point as well, I wanted to really accentuate the high vaulted ceiling and sort of give a feeling of grandeur to the space.

I love the Ferrari shot. I would enhance the already great image by:

- re-tweaking the scale of the street, seems that the stones are bit over-sized.
- I would take advantage of the paint material in KS and add a little bit more of details to the red paint. So far could look al little bit more 'plastic' than car paint. Have you tried with some flakes or maybe adding really subtle scratches/ imperfections ?

Regards , amazing jobs

Yea, there are definitely quite a few things I would go back and fix with that scene. That shot was done years ago, with KS4 I believe. I remember the paint being extremely difficult to get right back then, it would be interesting to take a stab at it again.

I did this the standard way that I learned some years ago. And it has always seemed to work best for liquids in a container. See the tutorial link below :)

Not a problem. I definitely enjoy learning new techniques from the awesome artists here. This was the first time I tried something like this, so I'm not sure if this was the best way, but it was surprisingly easy. I think you should be able to understand the setup from the attached image. The gradient map obviously acts as the opacity map for the green tinting, and I just had to mess with that color to get something realistic: not too saturated, not too dark, not too light, etc. The one thing you don't see is that I had to open up the Mapping Compass and rotate the gradient 45 degrees, which is the angle of the staircase/railing. and then move it on its Local Y axis to hit the glass where I wanted it. Nothing too complicated.

No, I pretty much never render with round edges on because I generally build all my 3d models myself, and at the end of my builds, I add appropriately sized Fillets to my edges depending on what type of material/structure it is supposed to be. So I never need to use Round edges, because I have always modeled them myself.

Thanks Rich, lighting is pretty standard for my general setup. Just using the HDRI and rotating the enviro until I liked the direction, messing with the contrast/brightness to get the look I wanted. This space is fully enclosed, but uses a lot of large windows that are out of view of the camera, you can see some of them in the reflection of the glass though.

Here's a new shot I finished up last night using KS6. I'm hoping to upgrade to KS7 soon because after that competition - I so badly want it. I was given this wine decanter as a wedding gift and loved the curvature of it...so naturally I had to model it. I setup this little scene to go along with it inspired by some images I've seen online. As always, feel free to comment/critique.

Thanks guys! and Magnus: yes, you sure do. Ever since I've seen the small tutorial (however many years ago) about rendering liquids in a container, I consistently model my liquid surfaces to have a meniscus. I think it gives an overall more accurate look to the renders and its generally pretty simple to execute. So why not, right?

Yes, I do the same! It's a small detail I love, and I put some extra love in those for a wine table i modeled up earlier this year.  Why not indeed.

Yes, this is a simple texture I built from an image I found online. Edited the image a little to have a more even appearance, then created a Normal Map out of it. The surface is actually a Transparent material in KS with a Diffuse and Normal map applied.

Yea, I know it's on the thicker side, I wanted something a little denser than just a standard napkin, more like a place mat. But it looks a bit too stiff to me now, so I might go back and make some edits. Thanks for the comment :)

Thanks guys. That's definitely my favorite as well. I was able to make a large rock-like texture using Scultpris (a really basic version of Z-brush) and applied some metallic paint to it to look like polished rocks. Surprisingly it worked really well and produced that Bokeh effect straight out of Keyshot.

Hi everyone ! Here's my first post in this forum, with one of my creations, the Boeing 797 Concept, MoM Aircraft.
modeled with Rhino 5 and rendered in Keyshot 7 Pro.
You can find some other pics here : https://fr.3dexport.com/3dmodel-boeing-797-concept-mom-aircraft-175357.htm

Hey there Power971,

First off let me say Welcome to the forums, it looks like you are off to a great start with that render and we can't wait to see more from you!
However, it looks like you accidentally posted this as a response in my personal thread. If you wouldn't mind, you could remove the post and then go back into the Amazing Shots section and start a "New Topic". That way you will have your own thread and can post more of your work there. :)

Hope to see more from you,
Jon Welch

Alright, since Nico asked, here is a small walkthrough of the ground plane I made for the MVMT watches. I'll first start out by saying I am very new to sculpting and have barely used the program Sculptris (free/basic version of Z-brush) so this may not be the best method. I will also say that I think I got lucky with this shot because the DOF really hides the imperfect geometry of the ground plane. But either way, I like how it turned out.

Walkthrough 1 - Here I started the program and created a new plane, I subdivided that 4 times (because the program always crashes after the 5th) and then took the simple Draw tool to create the wavy and lumpy surface you see. This is the base structure and I assumed once I put this is Keyshot I would find a decent angle to lay the Watch into. Take note that the area with the picture that says "Brush" has a grainy image below it, but the option "Enabled" is unchecked for this. I use that later for the rock/sand look, but the default brush will just extrude large mounds depending on the settings.

Walkthrough 2 - Now here is where you might notice my settings have changed with the Brush. Specifically where the "Brush" is now Enabled, and the settings have changed to work with this better. This brush is simply a grain that can be easily created in Photoshop, and the reason I used a brush like this is because from what I know about this program, the brushes work off of Darks and Lights. So Black will cut in, while White will extrude. At this point is where I zoom out and expand the brush to its max diameter, I then center the mouse on the plane and click once to try to achieve a shallow but dramatic texture.

Walkthrough 3 - Here you can see what the texture looks like from above. I usually have to mess with the settings a few times to finally get the look I want, but like I said - I'm still new to this.

Walkthrough 4 - Zoomed in here you can see the texture better. Once I was happy with this I simply exported as an OBJ and brought it into KS7 where I applied a metallic paint for a polished look.

Clay - Here is a screenshot of what the final model looked like without textures. I believe I had to keep the ground plane smaller in scale than I originally intended because the texture was just too large. I know I duplicated it a few times and then moved them around to get a larger area of of sand/rocks. I also wish the program wouldn't crash with more subdivides so I could have better looking geometry, but I've heard the program just isn't very stable to start with.

Either way, this is the method I took and hopefully someone will learn something from this, because ultimately we are all here to learn and improve our skills, and I enjoy helping others do that. :)

Had a lot of down time this weekend and decided to try a rendering for a dual screen monitor setup. First time trying something in this aspect ratio, and I'm pretty happy with it. As always, let me know what you all think.

Models were both done by Rex Fu on Grabcad

Alright so this was completely inspired by Magnus Skogsfjord and his Pear Cover Up. Once I saw it, I loved it and I had to try something for myself. Please don't hate me Magnus!
And if you havent already done so, check out his original render here: https://www.keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=8713.msg86522#msg86522

So no, I did not model these myself. When I was setting it up yesterday I did a quick google search for "free construction workers 3d model" and the first link brought me to Archive3d. Its not the best site, but for something like this, the models worked okay. Here's a link to the construction workers specifically: https://archive3d.net/?tag=Worker
But they do have more models of people that could work for you depending on what you need them for.
It'll be cool to see if you end up doing anymore shots like these. I had a few other idea's I might have to try when I get a chance.

Quite nice!

Couple thoughts. The iPhone threw me off... I wasn't sure what it was for quite a while. Viewed smaller, it's confusing. I don't think it needs to be there at all.

Other thought: Should the grille area be a soft material? I think it reads as a hard/metal surface and from what I associate with Marshall amps/speakers is the tradition and how I'd expect it to have a soft fabric grille. What do you think?

Overall, it's a great image and model! I really like the cable coming down the side. I know those can be a bit more effort to model.

Thanks for the feedback Will!

So for the phone, I didn't realize it was hard to decipher, but I guess that's what happens when you setup a scene knowing all the working pieces to it.

As for the grill, I'm surprised it looks like a hard/metal surface, because all the materials there are very soft. I found some great close up shots of the grill and tried to replicate the look. Perhaps I need to go back and revisit those materials.

I happen to have the Stanmore sitting on my desk.
I think the thing that might be throwing off the grill is that it is very slightly wavy in meat space
Here's the one sitting next to me right now.

I could be 100% wrong, so take it with grain of salt...

Maybe you could add a very large noise bump to make it look less like a solid plane? Robb's photo ref is nice... though lighting is different, his doesn't have the specular highlights that I think makes the rendering look more like a solid metal grille.

Again, just an opinion!

Thanks guys, I'm making some tweaks now to see what I can do. It's actually not a solid plane, I modeled the entire grill, so the geometry is there. I might just need to work on the materials/lighting.

Lighting all the way. Test some HDRIs until your grill look the way you want, then just add pins to suit the rest of the image. Orrrr, do the inverse, add some pins to change the grill. I usually add some black/grey pins in alpha blend mode to kill some bright spots and get some variation on metal pieces. Pretty useful when you don't want to change your entire scene.

Alright, hopefully this looks better in comparison to my first render of this scene. I tweaked my model of the grill and the materials on it, so hopefully it doesn't look as metallic now. Removed the phone because like Will said, it was hard to visualize what it was. I felt like the scene was empty, so I added a gold record on the wall for decoration. Let me know what you all think.

Not a problem Will. I tried creating some irregularities in the geometry, but it still looks very uniform, so I'm not surprised you assumed it was a map. I felt a little crazy for modeling it anyways haha

I primarily use Solidworks for all my modeling. I have only recently got into some sculpting/organic modeling using Sculptris. And then I have OnyxTree for making trees/plants.
There are some models in my work that I did not build myself (mostly cars and people) but aside form that, I try to build everything with Solidworks because that's what I was taught in with a product design background.

Haha yea, it looks pretty old-school, but it gets the job done. As far as render examples, I use the trees quite sparingly because I'm not that comfortable rendering them. I still never feel that they look real enough. Also, I have never done anything very architectural so I don't have anything landscape related. (perhaps it's time I try) There are a few shots with trees if you look back through this thread of mine, but the tress are usually out of focus, and just meant to be hinted at. But the shot with the most trees is the Bugatti Chiron and Mclaren shots I did recently, as well as this old render of mine: https://www.keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=13624.msg68122#msg68122 But I stripped the leaves from most of the tress to make it look more like winter.

Well, I've been sitting at home with Shingles for the past week, so what better way to spend my time then with rendering. Here's a few random thing's I did recently for practice.
The fantastic Porsche 918 was supplied by non-other than Nils.
The fire hose hookup was inspired by the tutorial from Esben Oxholm on creating worn painted metal.
The Eggs/JackDaniels are just something I wanted to try for material/texture practice.
As always, feel free to comment and critique.

Loving the egg and worn metal scene! Especially the eggs! I thing the raw one is borderline nailed, except for this extra thick egg white surrounding the yoke that seems to be missing, but that would be nitpicking. Material-wise I definitely think it's spot on.

The drifter pic is really cool too! I was thinking that the DoF might be a tad too strong for the top porsche one? That said, both you and I take a liking to DoF, so I like it, despite it making it look a little small :)

EDIT: I'm not sure about my DoF-criticism to be honest.

Haha no worries man, I know I love DoF shots, and I do agree the first shot of the Porsche proboably has a little too much DoF, it was in my head the whole time I was putting together the scene, but couldn't bring myself to admit it haha.

As for the egg white, are you talking about the Chalaza? I had to look up exactly what you might be talking about. I honestly forgot about this thing and never knew what it was called, but hey, now I learned something new lol

A new interior render I put together for some practice. My wife loves the ability to concept different ideas for our home, so we work together on different ideas. Just thought I'd share.  :)

There is a lot of stuff I've missed here! I'm loving the shot with the packaged sunglasses. Lovely reflections.

Also cool example of choosing elements for interior design! Did the same thing myself to pick a color when refurbishing stairs.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Hossein - I sure did. I recieved the pair as a Christmas present and knew right away that I had to build them. It was a bit of a challenge, but i think they turned out alright.

The VW Beetle can be found on grabcad (https://grabcad.com/library/vw-beetle (https://grabcad.com/library/vw-beetle)) But some additional work is required.

How sand in the picture Watch_Sand_HR is made? Especially interestingly as it is made on separate grains of sand on border with a thong.

This was made with the same process as some of the other watch renders I have done. You can find my walkthrough of it back on Page 5 of this thread (https://www.keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=19200.60 (https://www.keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=19200.60))

Been busy for a while and havent had much render time, but I managed to finish this beast today. The Hummer Hx Concept. The model can be found on Grabcad here: https://grabcad.com/library/hummer-car-1 (https://grabcad.com/library/hummer-car-1) But, I will say there are some details missing, and many surfaces needed fixing. Still an awesome model to start with though! I'm proud to say the entire scene is 3d, and the water droplets were a challenge, but I think they turned out well. As always, let me know what you guys think.

Edit: I should say, I was definitely inspired by Doug Didia and his awesome work.

Thought I'd share just a bunch of mostly random stuff I've done recently.
- The 918 Spyder model is Nils Piirma of course, rendered monotone for this weeks RenderWeekly challenge.
- The Kong dog toy was just for some texture practice
- Coffeemaker was some practice of modeling from a concept drawing done by Filip Chaeder
- Recently made the switch from Android to an iPhone 8 and of course had to build a model of it
- Tire Material was just for some material practice
- And the STI has finally been re-done with some extra rotational blur on the wheels as many suggested

Feel free to comment and critique :)

Thanks Eric! The water is Geometry, it's mostly just irregular skinny cylinders that I then used a few opacity maps on to give it the appearance you see.

Honestly this is STUNNING. I doubt I speak for just me, but I would really enjoy a break down of this scene. Things I am trying to understand/analyze about this image.

- Custom HDRI used? what did It look like?
- Droplets on the inside of the beaker. HOW?!? I feel like everyone has their own technique but I am interested in yours :)
- Material Graph on the flame
- Material Graph on the metal
- Was this one single render? Composited render passes? or multiple unique renders?
- What is your process for something like this? Do you use region render to asses your choices or render out full images to decide what to refine?

X_X so good. Would appreciate any level of insight! Thanks :)

Thanks! So it's nothing complicated, but it still took some trial an error for me to get it right. What I ended up doing was building two surfaces for each flame: one blue, one orange. Then those both use the same setup for the material graph, which is that the base material is X-Ray, with an opacity map that fades off the bottom of the surface. Then I applied an emissive material as a label with an opacity map that allows it to fade into the X-Ray material. So just the tip of each flame is emissive. The last thing I did was apply a small vertical translation animation and allow the renders to process with motion blur on. This helped blur out the edges of the flames a bit and look more natural I think. In general I think I need to work on this technique more, but I'm satisfied with how these turned out.

Thanks Will! I hear ya, I've wanted to try a stove top for a while now, but hadn't quite figure out what to do for the flames. This process I used sorta did the trick, but still needs a lot of work if you ask me. I'll definitely keep an eye out if you find a better solution ;)

Crap, I wish I had seen this before I posted my explanation on the flames. But I'll answer your questions now haha

Droplets: I've struggled with this for a while, and I'm hoping to get into some other modeling programs where I can actually create droplets as Geometry, but at this point, what I did for this scene was offset the surface of interior wall of the beaker by something very small, like .1mm. This just allows the surfaces to remain separate and not cause any weird tessellation lines inside KS. Then I have a Normal Map, and a matching Opacity Map that I found online some time ago. They took a lot of editing to get to where they are now, so perhaps I should share them so others can use them. But they are simply applied to that offset surface as a Bump (set to Normal) with the Opacity map in sync, the opacity map is also combined with a gradient to allow the visibility to fade away as the droplets run higher up the beaker. The material itself i just set to a refractive glass, and I messed with the refraction index until I was happy with the look.

Flame: See the above post :)

Metal: I've attached an image, but its pretty simple. Two noise textures, applied with a very very small bump, just to give the surface some irregularities, I actually try to do this with almost every surface in my renders in order to add realism, but it depends on the type of shot/material you want to achieve. Then the roughness mapping is what I really like to use because this allows the surface to have varying strengths of wear and tear. I use this map quite often and believe I got it from a Porsche scene that Nils Piirma posted on the website for download some time ago. As for the strength of the roughness on this metal, you can see my Output From and Output To values. I like to keep them pretty close so as not to create a huge difference between the rough/smooth areas.

Render/HDRI/Process: For the most part, these are 5 unique renders that I setup all in the same file using Studios. I have 5 total Studios, each with their own Camera, and their own Environment, but can very easily switch back and forth from using the Studios panel.
I started with the basic "3 Point Dark 4K" enviro and made edits from there for each Studio. This allows each one to have a very similar look, where I then just added extra light where I wanted, or took away light that I didn't like.
As for my decision making in the process of what I want to show. I decide early on what I want to show off with the close up shots and I zoom in and out finding angles and positions I like for each aspect of the product I want to show . So those cameras are all exactly positioned as you see in these final images. Each one has their own unique DOF and their own environment for custom lighting.

Thanks for the compliments and hopefully everything I said makes sense, I love how willing to learn/teach this community is.

The last thing I did was apply a small vertical translation animation and allow the renders to process with motion blur on. This helped blur out the edges of the flames a bit and look more natural I think. In general I think I need to work on this technique more, but I'm satisfied with how these turned out.

great idea!!! it came out perfect if you ask me:)
the only thing that bothers me really are the droplets inside the liquid.

Thanks for the breakdown @jon! Close, to the way I was thinking of approaching the flames. I'll let you know when I try mine!

As a graduate product designer I look at these renders with disbelief, absolutely amazing. The eye you have is fantastic, I might share some of the catalogue renders I do and get some feedback on them, as you guys are all superb!

You and me both haha I'm not happy with how that part looks but didn't have the time to change it unfortunately.

Please do share, we all get inspiration and ideas from the most unlikely places. I'm just a simple corporate 3d hack rendering products for websites and print, but I'm better at it (much better) than I was 2 years ago when I started because of seeing what is possible on this forum. Plus getting the fantastically positive feedback and suggestions from both other artists and luxion team members has helped me push my renders beyond what I thought I was capable of.

Realized I haven't shared some of the renders I've done recently. So here are a bunch of random things that you'll recognize as challenges from RenderWeekly. Feel free to comment or critique, and I hope everyone has had a great holiday!

Mostly just wanted to share the Razor concept I created for this weeks RenderWeekly challenge, it was a fun little minimalist project.

Then I have two renders I put together for my website: One of which really helped to visualize the Instruction Design ability, and the other to show off Keyshots toon/sketched look ability.

Lastly is the button that was for last weeks RenderWeekly. Simply put, the concept was born out of the impression I get from working with clients that aren't as educated on just what our field involves.

Feel free to comment and critique :D

Great images Jon!

Is the powerblock_sketch a toon render?? would love to see the process behind it.

Love the razor Jon. It's definitely my favorite from this weeks Renderweekly.

As mentioned on instagram, the "make it pretty" button reminds me of what I get from my clients now and again: "Could you make it more real?".
