Title: Edge outlines with Keyshot 7 ??
Post by: megadok6 on August 23, 2017, 02:56:27 AM
Hi every one, and before all, sorry for my English, I'm French ^^

I used to use this technic to make my edge outlines white or black on my renders: https://www.keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=11737.0

But it's not working anymore with KS7... Do you have any solution to do the same thing?

Thank you.

Hi,

As rightly pointed out in the topic you refer to, that trick was exploiting a bug in KeyShot 6. Since the bug was fixed for KeyShot 7, the technique doesn't work anymore.
We have plans to introduce a Toon texture that can be used as an opacity map for materials.
Unfortunately there is no straightforward alternative at the moment.

Too bad the "bug" can't be reinstated and renamed a "feature"!

I didn't know that, too bad :/

Well, if you plan to introduce a simpler way to do that, that's great. I use it for all my granite textures to make the edges more visible, it's essential for me...

I'll wait  ;)

Thanks for the quick answer!

You can still do it pretty quickly with two renders and a photoshop comp.

Thank you for your answer, but i'll keep using KS6 till there is a better way.

It's way easier with it, it only takes 1 render, et no need to go in Photoshop.

Not for KeyShot 7. Sorry.

Here is an alternate method which doesn't involve negative values. As well, you can map the Contour Color with colors or textures. Set the Color of the Toon material label to black. Map the Toon material Opacity with a Color To Number node, Output From value .4. Adjust the main material Diffuse texture brightness, and Specular value accordingly. In my example, the Diffuse granite texture brightness is set to 1.4. The Toon material Contour Color is mapped with the same granite texture with brightness set to 3.4.

Cheers,
Eric

How about this solution in KeyShot 7.2? You have to tweak some values, but it works OK.

(sorry for the screen grab with german UI) see details in attached example.
