Title: Advice required: texture(bump) direction
Post by: PSMFlor on August 29, 2018, 05:19:50 AM
Hi Guys,

I'm trying to imitate a flexible metal cable. It should be small spiral bump that follows the current tube. But I can't seem to get it work (see attached picture).

anyone know how I can fix this? or a way around it?

Kind regards

You will not be able to make an actual spiral around the tube. You can rotate the texture to make it look like it spirals around, but it won't actually do a coil/spiral.

The technical explanation goes quite deep if you're unfamiliar with advanced texture practices such as UV coordinates, and why this is often a pain point for those working in CAD programs.

I hope this simply answers your question rather than discourages you from trying to make it work. There's quite a few pages on this forum that get into some of the specifics of this. If this is your model, I believe it would actually be faster to model the detail you're trying to add with a texture.
