Title: Keyshot running on a Razer Blade laptop, how fast ?
Post by: levystore on September 23, 2019, 05:04:24 PM
Hi guys,

What laptop would you consider to be a good deal to run Keyshot?
Yes it has to be a laptop and 15.4" (I move a lot).

Here is 2 options I found interesting because of the weight, the CPU and the GPU.
And I need your advice on it:

i7-9750H but only GTX1660 Ti (which won't be enough for K9 I suppose), however 1TB storage.

or this one:

i7-9750H and RTX2060 so better for K9, but no complimentary storage. Only the 512 SSD, which could be quickly saturated.

Have you ever experienced running Keyshot on a Razer Blade? What's your thought?
I am not doing interior or animation, only still renders.

Many thanks!
;D

Go for the RTX version. Most of the GPU render engines, including KS9, will benefit from the RT cores.

Regarding the Razor.
I didn't worked with it, but from a common sense - this thing is so tiny. How could it constantly deliver all the performance and stay cool? Only by cutting down the performance.
You can read it in the CNet France - the laptop is overheating while using. The industry sells high spec hardware in tiny cases with reduced performance (RTX-2060 underperforms in laptops report claims (https://www.techradar.com/news/nvidia-rtx-2060-underperforms-in-laptops-report-claims)).
A good coolant is crucial for performance, this is why gaming notebook are so BIG and have big fans. So if you look for high performance, avoid tiny cases  ;)

You might have a look at something like this guy. For the price, it seems to compare to these guys pretty well unless you really need the higher refresh for gaming. https://us-store.acer.com/conceptd/conceptd-7-laptop-cn715-71-73a9

More memory, more ssd space, better graphics card, and UHD screen. It's not a sleek as the Razer but it's about the same weight.

Thanks Eugen, very interesting. Yes maybe it is not worth it to get the highest performance available on the market, when they are not fully functional. I absolutely need a laptop though - I'll have a look to MSI and Gigabyte, they are less expensive for the same performances, and better cooling.

This one looks very interesting. No the same price range though, the Blades in the links are in AUD as I live in Australia, so 2,999AUD means 2,000USD ish. However, even if like Eugen pointed before that RTX on a laptop could be not as good as a desktop version, it seems to have a very good screen and cooling system.

The RTX performance doesn't need to be that bad on notebooks. I believe that is dependent on the cooling system. MSI GT and Alienware look very promising to me.
It looks like MSI is better on CPU and Alienware on GPU performance (Benchmark LINK (https://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GT76-9SG-Laptop-Review-The-Titan-of-Gaming-Laptops.425043.0.html))

What about an external GPU (https://www.razer.com/gb-en/gaming-laptops/razer-core-v2 (https://www.razer.com/gb-en/gaming-laptops/razer-core-v2)). Ok it's a bit bigger than just having a laptop but you can still carry it easily. And the GPU is external so better for cooling.
Do you guys have any though on this?

--- edit ---

Also is there a big difference in your opinion between  i7-8750H and i7-9750H? In term of Keyshot 8 renderings. Many laptops come with an i7-8750H (and a RTX GPU).

External GPU:
I've no experience here, but have read that external GPU lack on performance 10-15% in comparison to on-board cards. If it's true and you would have a loss on performance with a mobile card anyway, why spending money for an external solution? The performance loss on mobile RTX would be then the same, but you would carry an additional device + cables with you.

To the i7:
Same issue again - be aware of tiny cases :D I believe that the i7-9750H has a better performance in KS interior mode or memory consuming scenes, because of the bigger cache. Like on any other memory dependent tasks - archiving, encoding, etc.

I was asking because in this scenario you can have a RTX 2080 Ti and your laptop won't reach 90 degrees...
But yes, it's definitely an extra cost + inconvenience because of extra volume and cables.
