Title: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X - 710 FPS
Post by: DriesV on February 14, 2020, 01:51:21 AM
Got a new machine here in the office to replace the trusty old dual Xeon mule. It's a screamer.

Camera Benchmark: 710 FPS
26,750 samples in 10 minutes

CPU                        AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 3.7GHz 32 Core 280W
RAM                       G.Skill Trident Z Neo 64 GB (4x16GB) DDR4-3600
GPU                       NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 16GB
Motherboard     MSI Creator TRX40
CPU Cooler         Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3

Went for an air cooler mostly to avoid the myriad of fail scenarios that people seem to run into with liquid cooling. It's working great and quiet and should prove to be very reliable.

I can fully recommend the Threadripper 3970X for a KeyShot workhorse. Great value for money and fantastic performance.
The new Threadripper 3990X is even faster! (More expensive as well.)

Holy crapola. That's unreal. This is a case of the hardware truly getting out of the way of the creative process.

:o That's awesome! I'm not sure if 26k samples is enough though...  ;D

Jeez Dries, that's insane. That's a pretty killer setup :)

:) YES! I was waiting for this exact CPU benchmark to show up.

I think I am going for it on my next build.

Wow !
I'm thinking in building a similar system :)
How is the Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 working for you?
Did you add a second fan to it?
Temps at full Keyshot load?
Cheers !

The Noctua cooler is working out great.
I did start out with a second NF-A15 140mm fan mounted on it, but at full load, it caused an annoying whine due to turbulence in the cooler. Removing the second fan increased the CPU temperature on full load 1 to 2 degrees, at most. I think the second fan is not really worth it, at least in my setup.
I do have a Noctua NF-S12A PWM fan mounted "axially" to the CPU cooler on the back of the case to blow hot air from the cooler out of the case. I have 3 of the same fans on the bottom of the case to take fresh air in, and 3 additional fans on the top to blow air out. So this machine has 8 fans (1 on CPU, 7 in case) in total to keep things running smooth. :)

Maximum temperature at full KeyShot load, running the camera benchmark for 10 minutes, is 78°C (monitored with AMD Ryzen Master Utility) today in Aarhus, Denmark (not the hottest climate 8) ).
Note that I haven't done and don't plan on overclocking this CPU.

All in all, Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 is a great cooler for Threadripper 3970X. Very decent cooling performance, quite silent even on load and hassle-free (knowing that no pump will ever break down).

Whew - nice!

If you put a raw egg near the output fan(s) do you get them cookin'!?  ;D

The exhaust air is certainly not steaming hot. You can comfortably put and hold a hand there.
As for the egg, I assume it could become more gelatinous.I guess I'll have to try to know for sure. Unfortunately, I'm all outta eggs at the moment.
