Testing out hair exported from Cinema 4D as geometry - its the first time iv'e done it, in the past iv'e always rendered C4D hair with the native renderer
There are pro's and con's of exporting hair as geometry, the pro's being the hair is taken into account by Global Illumination and AO in KeyShot (in C4D Hair is not affected by either of these...)
The con's being the time it takes to convert to geometry and the resulting filesize of the OBJ's - for instance the Wig/Furballs are 800 MB and the Rocking Sheep is 1.7 GB
The Wig/Furball has 80,000 individual hairs, the Rocking Sheep has over 200,000...
I think KeyShot does a fantastic job at rendering it realistically...
Tell me what you think
Cheers
J
wicked ;D
(pun intended)
I love the rocking sheep. He sort of looks like stoner-me from 30 years ago. ::)
I think the rocking sheep looks like from a world where horses and elephants got extinct and not mammoths ;D
Cousin Itt!
Seriously, those are very realistic.
Ed
i like 2nd shot.
how long it takes to render?
Love it! What material did you use? Translucent?
Thanks for the comments chaps, it's much appreciated...
Ed : thanks, yeah actually they look much more realistic than the C4D rendered equivalent which look quite 'cartoonish'
Imshinji : the same as any other render really, the floating wig one rendered in about 5 mins, real time render...
Thomas : No, not translucent, 'metal' would you believe... with a higher than usual IOR
PhillipeV8 : LOL, thanks
Got a few more images to post then i'll move on to something else...
Cheers
J
Wow..real nice..i love it, !!! could you explain how u made hair materials?
Thx
Another hair/furball
I just want to say to the powers that be, thanks for the Facebook blog feature - it's really appreciated and I feel honoured - it was pointed out to me by a colleague...
I also had no idea that some of my other work had been shown - amazing !! thanks
Cheers
J
Those are pretty darn cool!
Cheers!
Yet another couple...
Really ramped the lighting up on the second one to get a bit of backlighting going on... also this is made up
of 320,000 hairs as it has a secondary layer of 'Fill Hairs' active...
Oh and as you can see in both of them, the fur colour is driven by a texture
Thanks for looking
J
Awesome - love every single one of these images.
That last one is crazy ... you're getting close to a tennis-ball ;)
Really nice renderings! It looks very realistic. I use Cinema 4D as well as a front end to KeyShot and I am always amazed how stable KeyShot is when it comes to extremely large datasets. I've played with different types of exports, OBJ is kind of my default, by FBX is starting to be really good when I want more access to parts without having to flatten them first. Also 3DS has been giving me better results than OBJ on occasion. What's been your experience with this?
Hi john,
In C4D, what Type are you using to Generate the mesh ? Triangle, Square, Circle, etc... ???
Have you test the same with fur ? because i can't Generate a mesh in C4D
Thanks
Hello Philippe
This is what you need to do :
Add hair to object - don't use fur because there are no options to generate geo.
Go to generate tab inside of hair attributes and choose circle with end cap - it's very important to keep 'single object' checked - if you uncheck it your system will probably crash as you will get one object per one strand of hair.
Then make the hair object editable and export - but be warned, depending on the amount of hairs you have be prepared for huge file sizes
I've just done a quick test and 350,000 hair on s simple sphere when saved as a C4D file was 4.75GB and a whopping 8.78 GB as an .OBJ
I think I heard somewhere though that future versions of KS might be able to use hair splines out of C4D, but don't quote me on this I might be wrong.
Thanks a lot John.
What material must be use to hai in keyshot
I 've read you use metal and IOR but what are the adjustments ?
I've used hair to render Grass but i'm searching for good adjustments material
This morning is wasted now and it's all your fault Philippe... ;)
I had plans to walk my dog around the local reservoir with my partner, but I've spent it playing with hair in C4D - I forgotten how much fun it is !!

I've found using the metal material with either a single diffuse colour, gradient or curvature works best. Also, I've used metallic paint material which also gives good results.
As for grass, I have no idea, never done it before, but try a gradient with 2 shades of green perhaps, or even brown for the roots and green for the stems for older grass, that might work.
So I take it you've solved the export issue you had ?
i would like to use a gradient in grass material but i can't orient it.
i can't orient it (background to top)
all the choices in tab are planar or other...

In that case you'll need to uncheck 'single object' in the generate tab (C4D)
But then you run the risk of crashing C4D or your whole system depending on how many hairs you set.
** just tested it with 5000 hairs, 'single object' turned off and it seems to work. add gradient texture in KS and set as view angle/viewing direction
If this is not what you need then I don't know...
thanks again John for your help ;)

You're welcome, no probs :)
you are the top John ! thanks for sharing ;)
