Title: Another material ball...
Post by: DriesV on March 20, 2013, 08:44:01 AM
Here is my twist on the 'KeyShot material ball' concept. ;)

;D Nice Dries, Did you use the geometry from Chad's second mat ball for the 'frame' or have you modelled this ?

Just curious that's all...

I did a remodelling in SolidWorks.
I'll post my model and a KS package later on...

Ok cool, I've got a use for it  ;)

OK, I confess.
I made it specifically as a fractal light cage. ;D

Dries... I am going to kill you  ;)

I think you knew that's what I had in mind...

Lovely stuff...

J

p.s. I'm not really going to kill you

Lovely - now it needs to be animated ...

Okay, as promised: a KeyShot package ready for you to fool around with. ;)
It has the full material ball (some parts hidden when you open it in KeyShot) + a nicely centered & configurable fractal. Oh, I also added a 360 deg animation on the light cage, in case you really have too much time on your hands. ;D
Have fun!

All files are now uploaded.
See previous post for links.

Please, check the y position and overall scale of the fractal model. Somehow these parameters are not maintained when saving and reopening the bip file.
Check the screenshot for the right values.

Also Dries, I don't know if you've realised but the fractals 'D' parameter is never saved with the BIP, it always resets itself to zero... If you don't make a note of this value, your fractal will look different on re-opening. I tend to make a note and tag this value on to the filename when saving the file initially.

Check it out...

John, I didn't notice about the 'D' value. Thanks for pointing out. ;)

Anyway, here you have another quick rendering.
It kind of reminds me of a hatching maggot... ???

I'm puzzled.
Somehow the area light doesn't interact with materials when roughness is greater than 0. ???
Even with a slight roughness of 0,005 the area light looks pitch black in the reflections.

I seem to have this issue with every scene. (4.0.74)

Yes Dries, I've had that issue as well, but to be honest it doesn't concern me too much as I'm not keen on the light emitter itself being reflected - I generally disable that option.

Another version of the material ball.
Now with a bevelled outer rim and an external light rim.

That was a great idea, Thomas! ;)

I decided to make a little VR.
You can take the light cage for a spin. The play of light sort of gives the shiny fractal a lot more depth...

looks really good if you get the cage spinning quick! :P

Can you send this to me so we can host it on our end?

Thanks!

Thanks!
side note: rendering the 180 base frames took about 8 hours. So still pretty speedy with all the area light lighting going on. :)

Thomas, I just uploaded a zip with the VR files to keyshot.wetransfer.com (info@luxion.com).

Inspired by the wallpaper posting of John here:

I decided to make a wallpaper of my own material ball. ;)

Awesome - thanks for sending. 180 frames - ambitious!

And that poster is great.

It works quite well as an iPad background.

Easter bunny with wavy lighting...

Bunny model is a Stanford Bunny. The material is DuPont Hot Hues Lime Light paint.

BE WARNED!
The light cage lighting on the paint material has a hypnotizing effect. ;)

Ha ha, love it - A highly novel use of the Stanford Bunny...

Thanks!

Btw, rendering the bunny VR at 800x800 was MUCH faster than rendering the fractal VR at 600x600.
The 180 frames took exactly 3 hours to render (dual Xeon E5-2680).

Somehow, the same DuPont material renders WAY slower when applied to the fractal model... ???
