A shot of an iron crystal unit cell.
Just for fun...
Oh, rusty paints in the library are fantastic! ;)
Dries
More iron... :)
Dries
that is very ... Belgium ... ;D
Hmmm...I do have to render the real deal (Atomium, Brussels) one day...
Still something to be proud about, besides our glorious taxation system... ;D
Dries
Very sexy Dries, I like, especially the first one...
J
p.s I always thought you were Dutch, not Belgian for some reason...
Very nice.
Don't ask what or why... :)
Dries
#omdathetkan
;)
Dr. Who left it when he called round for Tea and biccies
Martin
Really like that first one and especially the material.. :D
Great colors Dries!
The last one is pure gold... I want to play with it... 8)
J
Thanks, all!
Here's another version. This one is stackable for a full-blown Fe cubic lattice... ;D
Looks almost like K'NEX now... ???
I should also mention that inspiration for all of this probably comes from the work of Simon Williamson.
John, I'll see what I can do. ;)
Dries
Wow, that's even better - the end thingumajigs resemble some of my TopMod creations...
How did you model these ?
Really outstanding in my eyes...
J
Thanks, John.
It's all SolidWorks...
Dries
Well it looks to me like SolidWorks is the dogs doodahs when it comes to hard surface modelling... obviously in the right hands of course ;)
J
I`d like to see you try and assemble one of those bad boys! lol
First iron cubic lattice stacking attempt... ;)
Dries
Awesome - looks great!
Beautiful Dries, not really much more I can say...
J
I felt like increasing the feeling of depth, so I rendered the stack at a more dramatic wider angle top view with strong DOF.
Dries
For what it's worth...
I'm sharing a KeyShot package with you guys.
The KS scene file contains 2 models:
- Fe-unit-cell_full-single_20130329 - complete model with shelled 'bars', internal spheres in each node (area light?), blue bar frame is single piece = overlapping geometry when stacking!
- Fe-unit-cell_stackable_20130329 - stackable and simplified version, no shell, no internal spheres, outer bars are separated (can be deleted/hidden individually for stacking)
Pitch for stacking is
150mm. Models were imported at original size, so multiples of 150mm can be used for exact alignment.
The models were made as multi-body SolidWorks parts. As a result, the model tree in KS isn't terribly clear. It's still manageable, though.
See attached screenshots to get an idea of how to stack these units. You'll have to delete some parts on duplicated models to avoid overlapping geometry. Each unit's origin is right at the center of the inner orb (yellow), so you can easily rotate a unit around it's local origin and keep the 150mm pitch for stacking.
Have fun!

Hey Dries, thanks, that's very kind of you...
But, is there any chance of getting the original one :

Sure, no problem...

I hope the mesh quality is OK.
It's as much as I can bear on my measly DSL line. ;D
Dries
A slightly ominous angle and mood. :D
Dries
Another rusty version with differently styled glass panel pattern. ;)
Dries
Same box, but in mint condition... :)
Dries
Love them both Dries - but I like the pristine one best...
Really dig the new glass panels
J
Very interesting. The glass looks beautiful on the last one.
Here's another pristine shot. :)
Dries
Lovely clean render, loving those new glass panels - nudge, nudge, wink, wink... ;)
J
Danger inside!

Dries
Thank you for sharing, Dries! ;D
Nice one Dries!
Thanks!
I'm glad you like it. ;)
Feel free to post your own renderings of that scene here too... *wink* *wink* ;) ;)
