Title: Average time for redndering animation?
Post by: samfisher on June 08, 2013, 03:04:18 AM
Below find a sample frame out of 289 frames. It has been more than 16 hours since the rendering was started. Please look at the quality and tell me is it normal for animation to take this much time?

I have an i3 laptop with 2.3 Ghz speed and 4 Gb ram. The output was set to maximum time of round about 16 hrs with mpeg compression. I had first tested the quality at different sample rates, and the time taken for them would have exceeded 28 hrs. Also note that the quality for them was not noise free. Find attached sample.

Anyone? Atleast give me an idea of the average time for rendering animations

There are a lot of variables to look at when asking about rendering time.  The material, lighting, render settings and your hardware.

I have a sample of a very simple part that takes minutes to render with standard render settings.  If that part is in view during an animation it will take much longer to render that frame.  Once that part is no longer in view the render time for each frame drops dramatically.

Running an animation on your i3 laptop will take much longer of course than on a multi-processor xeon rig.

We did an animation render on our 160 core render farm that took 11-1/2 hours.  The flip side to that is that the customer said that it was taking them days to run the same render on a single workstation.

So it's very hard to ask or answer an apples to apples question such as how long a render should take.

Actually it took over 14 hours to render a below average quality animation on my laptop (the model in the above attached pics). What do you mean by "if the model is in view it takes more time?"

If I do a simple rotation animation the parts that are in view are being rendered while the parts not in view (on the back side) are not rendered.  Therefore if you have a 100 frame render and your first couple of frames take 1 minute each your total render time may not be 100 minutes.  It all depends on what is being rendered in each frame.

Shadows on diffuse materials do take longer in realtime mode. You may be better off running with advanced settings. Render out a single frame and see how long it takes.

I tried the samples option for rendering. The first frame took more than 10 minutes. I had used 32 samples. Does that mean each frame would take 10 minutes or would the time vary according to what is in view?
