Title: How do I create Fiber, hair effect?
Post by: Barbarian on August 12, 2013, 11:45:58 AM
How can I create a realistic or somewhat realistic effect of hair fiber. Basically I am trying to add hair fibers on top of the helmet like the illustration. I am unsure how to achieve this effect. the helmet is done in Solidworks 3d but its hard to create individuals hairs will take forever so I was hoping I can texture in keyshot? anybody have any ideas? helmet was rendered in keyshot

cool helmet.
in regards to the fur on top of it, well for now the only way is to go with a fur groom converted to polygons. (you can do that in maya with its own tools or some other plugins like shave&haircut, Yeti)
Or any other main 3d app I am sure had some hair and fur tools.
I believe tho that In the next versions or perhaps revisions of keyshot we will be able to import and render out  the groom as curves instead of polys and therefore save quite a bit on the final polycount

There is experimental support for fur and hair via fbx and alembic file formats.

Or you can aply a texture, then when it's done, you've got quite a bit of post to do to get the ragged edges ...
