Title: Holtoons
Post by: Chad Holton on January 05, 2014, 09:26:53 AM
In my younger days, before I thought girls and video games were interesting, I subscribed to a magazine called CARtoons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CARtoons_Magazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CARtoons_Magazine) I would try to recreate some of the illustrations in pencil form... wish I would have kept them now. Anyhow, I still have a fondness for car caricatures, so I'm starting a thread where I'll be messing around and creating some of my favorite vehicles. Stay "tooned"...  :D

Great idea Chad.   Put on your Rat Fink t-shirt and channel Ed "Big Daddy" Roth!

;D  Yeah, I love his work Ed.

Well, here's my first go at it. It is a 1970 Oldsmobile 442. Hope you like it. Critiques are welcome.

Insane!  In a "Roth kind of way".  Now, how about trying this with a "toon" PS comp?  Drop the toon on top, then screw around with transparency?

Love it Chad. Is that all geometry or are you shaping/skewing in PS? We may have to have a 'Roth' contour option added to the toon shader :)

Awesome, looking foreword to more!

Gonna have to ask, how did those flames become reflected in the exhaust in your first post? perhaps using a version of Keyshot 5..?!

@Jeff - Thanks - Hope you and your family had a great holiday!

@Josh - Thanks man! It is all geometry (other than some bump maps for the headlights, reflectors and tire sidewall). Also, I should have mentioned what I did in post: swapped the shadow out to have one directly under the car and that was it. It's all KeyShot (3 passes: main shot, shadow and mask (to cut the shadow out)).  ;D "Roth" option, I like that!

@NDenekamp - Thanks! The next one will be a popular exotic from the 80's. As for the flame reflection; I originally had the flame on a cone shape (with the flame getting larger as it exited the exhaust). It's a flame texture on the cone using the emissive material (not sure why I didn't use a trapezoid shape). Anyhow, I ended up swapping the flame out in post for a different shape, with a little more "fun" curved shape. At the angle it's at now, it probably shouldn't reflect it but I liked the reflection there and left it.  :D

Thanks Tim! Anxious to see what you come up with. The Dart, as Ruckus mentioned, would be sweet..

Here's the latest Holtoon - Early 80's Lamborghini Countach
I exaggerated this one a little more than the 442.
Not sure yet, but I may add a little more to it (side reflectors being one).

Hey, Chad- sharp!  But something does not seem "Finky" enough on the Countach.  It's sort of like a real car with weird wheels.  Maybe tweak the wing to be more finky?  Bigger, nastier- that sort of thing. Big enough for a "rat" decal?

These types of vehicles take me back to my mid teen age years and Custom Car magazine, the adverts and the SuperCC cartoon was full of this type of imagery. I tried to replicate but failed miserably back then so I can appreciate how difficult this must be to create this artistry with polygon modelling. Great workmanship all round

Here's another version - was shooting for the hand drawn/rendering look.

Combine this with some toon renders and add a few sketch line in photoshop and you will have an excellant illustration.
Just something to think about.
Love it.

What's really a blast is to render a full-on beauty shot, followed by a toon.  Overlay (Place and Link) them in Photoshop and horse around with transparency.  I've even done that with medical devices, where each part in the beauty shot is a gloss paint in different colors, this to show assembly, not product.  The toon then brings clarity to the image in a weird but wonderful way.  Try it- you'll like it!

Thanks guys and for taking the time to give feedback/comments!  :)

I think I'm finally done with this one. My friend has a yellow '72 Barracuda drag car that resembles this a bit. May print it out and give it to him as a gift for tinting the windows on my '83 Grand Prix back in 1993... doubt he'd be expecting it.  ;D

Anyhow, little bit of post work with this one (AO pass, glare, vignette, color tweaking):

Martin: Probably won't do a MG GTB anytime soon. Not familiar with that car at all - had to look it up. Was that your first ride?

I was thinking of finishing the 2015 Challenger I had started on a while back but may go a totally different route.

Hi Chad

QuoteMartin: Probably won't do a MG GTB anytime soon. Not familiar with that car at all - had to look it up. Was that your first ride?

It was my art teacher at school who had one, and he used to do hand drawn drawings in this cartoony style that you are doing here. I would sit there amazed at the speed and accuracy at which he could churn them out. His other favourite was the VW Beetle. Sadly I can't remember his name, but he was a massive influence on me and the love of cars that i now have.

Another great car with that boxy look to it, so should adept to this style of art too.

What is this style of vehicle art called ?

Sounds like an awesome teacher - would like to have seen his artwork. I still like to hand sketch for fun every now and then. I am never good with proportions though - which isn't a bad thing when doing caricatures, I guess.  :D

I prefer to call this art "car caricatures". But have seen it called CAR toons, toon cars and toy cars. My next car caricature will be more roth-rat-finkish, I hope.

The next Holtoon is finally complete: Enzo Ferrari

I started this one over a year ago, forgot about it until I stumbled across it recently and decided to finish it out.
