I have a pin with base material Tin needs plating Gold at the end of it. What can I do just is add Tin material to the pin. How can I plating? Can I attach material to one surface?
Thanks.
(My PC is XP system, KS version is V1)

Hi kukk_0,
Change the color on the one surface of the pin before exporting.

Hi kukk_o;
I know what you are describing- I do it all the time on electronics components.  You need to create a descrete surface on the pin(s) to define the areas that will be TINN plated.  In SolidWorks I use the "split line" tool, then color the resulting surface something different than the pin to "map" the surface for KeyShot materials.  I don't know how to "split" in other modelling apps, but I know you can do it.  Perhaps an offest surface of about .0001"?  Hope this helps!

The model came from PRO/E WF4 .igs or .stp fromat. Could KS define material by surface? How? I just know define material by component.

Thanks for your reply. You mean create another surface cover for each pin and define it as part in KS. It's a large work to do for me.

Apply a color to an individual surface on the part level inside Pro/E.

That's how it's done, except on these pins the plating does not cover the entire pin, only a long portion of it, so the pin(s) requires an additional descrete surface (offset surface or split-line) in the CAD model to apply KS material to.  If the pins are patterned, it should be easy to just create this surface on one pin...

You might be able to pull this off with a texture... I've created a similar effect by accident before. It may save you a little time and wouldn't have to import it again.

Thank you all.
An additional descrete surface (offset surface or split-line) in the CAD model and attach color in CAD model could resolve to issues.

Thanks Cholton. You mean pull off with a texture in KS directly? But how to translate plating material to texture? Or download texture from some one?

Chad Holton

Right, you can pull it off with KS directly. I whipped this up in a few minutes this morning so it will get you an idea of what I mean.

The first one is a png file with a transparent half. The other is a pin model using the png and the settings I had used. The pin was all one color when exporting out of ProE.
