To insure woodgrain goes the correct direction, the edge faces need to be split. I think the term is part painted...

but if I try to import this with decent tessellation in the new importer (beta) then removes the knowledge that these are seen as different parts for different materials and brings it through as one piece. how do I fix this?

The model is created in solid edge ST5 on windows 7, using keyshot 5.

Any ideas how to get the edge split I need and the tessellation I want as I do a lot of quick one part (multi colour) models for customer reference.

Thanks.  Joe.

Can you send me the model so we can take a look?
Have you tried the "non-beta" importer?

Non beta works fine, but the tessellation is awful, its attempting to pull the top surface away from the edges and wont give me smooth edges.

The "non-beta" importer is reading the tessellation that is in the file. If you need finer tessellation, you would need to adjust it inside Solid Edge.
