Hi all,

Was hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I have a spotlight and would like it to emit a ray of light to show its switched on etc. I've tried assigning light to the bulb etc which makes it go white and look like its switched on but can't get a ray of light?

Thanks,

Mark

If you are wanting what i think you are, then KeyShot does not do a volumetric light directly, however you can read a great study by Eric that shows how to create a pseudo 'God rays' type of lighting effect here https://www.keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=13728.0

Depends on the look you are going for, I work a lot with laser indicators, where you aren't "supposed" to see the beam, but in order to describe how the product works, I use long cylindrical goemertry with an emmissive material, then do all my beam look work in photoshop using the clown pass. I am usually going for a glowing light saber look with some transparency though.

If youa re looking for the more diffuse transparent god ray look, then yeah, look at the post above. But remember, you can't always get the look you want inside keyshot, don't be afraid to do loads of post work in photoshop or after effects. Even though mine are stills, I still use AE a lot because I just know how to get the look I want with the tools in that program. Plus I already have loads of plugins for it :)

Good luck and post some pics!

Thank you so much for the two posts above, really appreciate it.

Perhaps I was a little vague in my description, I was after this sort of effect whereby the ray of light is hitting the wall?

IES lighting. Learn it, live it, love it.

I've just dived into IES profiles, and while a bit vague and hard to undertand at first, they are very very powerful to be able to use. Here are a couple of links that I've used to figure it all out, and some resources for downloading the profiles-

And here is a batch of profiles that are fairly useful and give a wide range of looks-

Hope this help!
