They talk about it here
https://luxion.atlassian.net/wiki/display/K6M/KeyShot+Import

but the picture does not show it and i don't see it on any of my imports. could it be its not on demos?

All i see is calculate normals and nothing in the manual about what that is. Yes I am brand new to modeling

Welcome!

I'm not an expert with modeling, but I can probably help clarify where the confusion is coming from.

There actually are a few different variations of the import dialogue, they are file type dependent. The tessellation dialogue will show up if you're importing a file type that supports NURBs data (usually found in CAD modeling programs). Keyshot needs to create an underlying mesh in order to do its thing, and this is where you set the resolution of that incoming mesh.

If you're importing a file type, such as an OBJ, that file type is already a mesh, and Keyshot does not need to create its own, therefore, no need to tell Keyshot the quality of the tessellation, this is built in from your modeling program. There's obviously a lot more to it than that, but bottom line is, it is file type dependent!

Hope that helps,

It sounds like what David said is correct. As you can see in the example that you linked to, the dialogue box shows that they are importing an .obj file. I usually import .stp, .step or .iges files into KeyShot. When importing any of those formats, I get the tessellation quality option in the dialogue. (see attached image) So far, I've never had to adjust it. I just leave it at 0.2 and everything seems to be fine.
