Lasso tool to define a region

I would love a lasso tool (similar to photoshop) to define a render region.  Even better would be the ability to add or subtract to a selection like photoshop. Sometimes I want to focus on parts of the geometry that are on opposites sides of the presentation window.

Even if it were just the 2nd part of this, being able to select multiple rectangular regions.
