Project window / Material pane

Hey guys.

Why is it that you have to double click a material in the material list to edit it? I think it would be better to just have to select it with a left click to edit. 
It even says "Please select a material to edit." in the actual pane there. For me, selecting is left clicking. Feels confusing.
Also when going through materials in the list the properties of the selected material isn't showing.
