Allow multi-materials using displacement maps

I was so excited to be able to use displacement maps with the same engraving on dozens of items - using a multi material with different colors. but it doesn't work.
Now if I try to set up multiple multi-materials the file takes 5-10+ minutes to load up while it generates every separate displacement map.
