Who you gonna call when your precious KeyShot watch gets lost in space?
That's right, a big fat golden robot!

It is still pretty much a rough draft, but I will be tuning this for a while. Has been tremendous fun so far :)...
This project started off when I had the idea to do something with very minimal lighting and see how far I could go. Space is all about strong highlights and deep, sharp shadows. I like that... :)

I have some requests... ;D

Anyone want to share 3D models/free 3D resources for space-related stuff?
I'm interested in:
* astronaut suit (preferably NASA  ;))
* astronaut glove, helmet
* space debris (mission artefacts)
* asteroids, space pebbles
* robotic arms
* textured planets  ;)

Okay, here I have some refined renderings...
I can't decide whether to go for blank, stars or planet BG  ;D!
So I present you all.

Any suggestions for me to improve on these images, rendering-wise or post-wise?

great work. love the idea. I'd let it bake a little more to reduce the graininess.

DriesV

Yeah, I totally agree on the grain.
I did the last render with the realtime renderer @ 1080p. I had set the time to 24 hours What you see is the result after 24 hours of non-stop dedicated rendering on my crappy notebook  ;D. Planning to go DP Xeon soon...

Today I reran the render, but without DOF. Still needs more time to get rid of all the grain, but this won't take 24 hours, I reckon...
