Max Samples / Advanced Render set to same settings, yet they look different!

So, I know that if I'm on max samples it pulls from my project settings, yet even if I have them the same as the advanced renderer the advanced renderer renders a far less grainy image. Am I missing something? Would anyone know what could cause this behaviour?
