Bump map issue

I've been trying to bump map a decal on the front of a single NURBS surface but there seems to be some strangeness going on...

It doesn't matter if I use white on black, black on white or white on transparent texture the render mesh is shown and the surface looks terrible.

The logo is the correct scale and in the right place but the surrounding surface has all the lines from the render mesh.

It's just a simple embossed logo.

Has anyone else had this issue?
