Is there a way to animate the gem stone material? There is no checker for the color.

Claus Jensen

You can use the dielectric material instead and put a color fade on the transmission.

You can still apply an animation even though it does not have a checker icon (try it by dragging the output of the animation onto the gem material node in the material graph). The checker icon indicates that something can be textured, almost everything can be animated.

Would you please explain more what to drag and where to?

soren

In the material graph, do the following:
1) Add a color fade animation
2) Drag the output socket (upper-right corner of the animation node) onto the gem material node. Do not drop it on Bump or Opacity but anywhere else on the node
3) A context menu will appear with all the parameters you can animate (see attached screenshot)
4) Select color

Thank you for the detailed answer.
Is there a way to animate the material several times?

soren

The Color Fade has full keyframe support. You can insert as many stops as you like, but you cannot have more than one Color Fade node.

Does it mean that I can't change the diamond to ruby and then to sapphire etc.?

soren

Yes you can. Set the color stops as shown.
