Update geometry and keep animations

I am animating an assembly in Keyshot 5 64bit and it is incomplete. I would like to update the assembly with the new parts and keep the current animations.
I have tried re-importing the STEP file and selecting 'update geometry' but this didn't work for two reasons;
1) the existing model was unaffected but a new, far larger one was added at the origin.
2) The new model had no animations assigned to it at all.
I have also tried 'add to scene' out of interest but, as expected, it added another assembly to the scene with no animations.

I would like to know if there is a way to either;
A) bring in the updated parts and have them integrated with the existing model and keep the animations already assigned.
B) copy all the existing animations over into a new model of the updated assembly.

I have expermiented the same issue with 3dm files. however, i have noticed that if you convert you imported model into obj, then you keep the animation during import.... strange, but this is half a solution.
