Thanks. I've added more screenshots of the development process and a link to HeartFlow.com so that you can see the interactive images. A simple yet effective transition revealing the colored vessels. The stylized heart rendering is also being printed for a back drop in a large standing kiosk. That render was the largest render I've ever done to date. 296,6 megapixel image!  (14822 X 20014)

What material are you using for the general volume (white)? Have you tried occlusion for stronger shadows ?

If I recall correctly, it's just the standard diffuse material. Is there a different way to get occlusion?

You could try the occulusion procedural.
