I thought I had read on some forum that there was an external box you could get that would basically let you access additional cpu's, to really give a boost to multithreaded tasks like rendering. Am I just imagining this, or has anybody heard of such a thing. I ask, because the frame rates I get out of my Precision laptop (with four cores) is atrocious.

Thanks

Are you talking about building a render farm? If so, you can do this on your own. There are a lot of articles on it out there. I like this one http://helmer.sfe.se/

No, what i thought I remember was a little box that you plugged into your USB or Sata connection that contained multicore processors. These would give your own machine more cores.

Must've been something from Boxx ?

Browse their products ... I think they got it.

Yes, it is the Boxx.  I saw it running KeyShot at Siggraph last year.  I think it had 72 cpu's or something, "burning" the competition!

Yes, that is what I was remembering. Thanks, i will check it out.

So the Boxx Renderpro line looks like it's treated as a render farm. Does Keyshot support htis or is there some other software that is required? Does it allow you to use the Boxx to speedup your workflow within KeyShot or is it just used to send a rendering to?

We have shown the concept of realtime raytracing across a network last year at Siggraph. We have not made it publicly available at this point in time.

Cool! When will this be available?

No release date has been set as of yet.

Perhaps hiring or buying computing power on a cloud system would be a more cost efficient way to do it? Less hassle setting everything up and no maintenance on your part

I'm not sure if anyone is looking at this thread any more but I've also been interested in a box solution that could scalable.
I found workstation specialists in here in the UK do this

Does this do what you want?
