Put together our new TR2 machine today and had to run the KS benchmark right away!  Needed to do a bios update for the motherboard to post due to the new processor, otherwise setup went smoothly.

Will be running some comparison renders against our 112 core xeon rig, 360 core farms and 128 core TR1 farm.  With the TR1 farm we will try limiting it to 64 cores to compare apples to apples.

Getting close to that 506 FPS. Wonder if you can get that number with a small over clock.

Gordon

Oh man, I gotta get me one of these now.

Right around $5300, but that's with a Quadro P4000 gpu.

Just for comparison, that's the numbers I'm getting with our new HP Z8 32c/64t machine. That machine was $9000 and we just killed the motherboard last thursday. Fortunalty there's an HP repair center near by and they were out and replaced it within 2 days.

These high performance machines just makes me question their ability to run 100% for long periods of time. WIll be interesting to see how the TR2's fare.

I can say that the threadripper machines (both 1 and 2) run much cooler than our HP z840 88 core machines.  When rendering the HP machines get quite warm.  Granted the HP's are dual processor and air cooled versus the water cooled AMD's.

Just ordered my components today for a new  'budget' TR2 machine.  Cost was $2900 not including graphics card and OS (had a Quadro P2000 from another machine and our IT buys the OS).  I probably could have saved a bit more on the RAM, secondary HDD, and case, but think it will offer a very good 'bang for the buck'.  I could have also dropped to 800W PS but might put a higher end Quadro card in it in the future and plan on some overclocking so went with 1000W to be sure I had enough juice to run it once it's all tweaked.

Will post results when I get KS going on it, but expect it to be in the mid-400's fps.

Got the TR2 running today. Not overclocked yet. KS v8 FPS is in the high 400's (averaging around 470).  I will try KS7 in a bit to see if it's any slower.

Hello

I also just finished my Threadripper Gen 2 rig yesterday and did a benchmark with no optimization/overklocking other than UEFI BIOS optimization on Auto.

Asus ROG Strix x399-E
AMD Threadripper 2950x
32gb - Corsair DDR4 Quad Channel 3000mhz
500mb Samsung 970 m.2
NZXT AIO x62 cooling

FPF is at 305

Are you running manual optimization?

Hi Peter. Although I'm not sure, I think the other workstations mentioned here runs the threadripper 2990wx.
Perhaps you are aware and just asking for general optimisation tips :) - Please ignore this if that's the case.

The 2950x has only half the CPU cores as the 2990wx and a little higher clock rate, so 300fps is about where it should be.

Got it. Missed that it was the 2990wx. However, looking at other results, 300 puts it in parity with the 1950 buildsx, which makes sense as they have the same cores and threads running at 3500. I will do some experiments with higher core speeds.

Thanks, and impressive results!

Gordon

FYI v7 was somewhat slower at around 430fps on my build.
