I need to spend this weekend creating a somewhat complex render (at least it is for me) but there's one component that I'm not sure how I'm going to tackle.

It's a transparent PVC tube that has reinforcing fibres embedded in a kind of braid pattern. I'm guessing I will need to create a repeating pattern, but how will I get it to line up so that there are no obvious seams, and how can I make it appear below the surface?

If anyone has any thoughts or advice, or could point me in the right direction of which techniques I should investigate that would be very much appreciated. Cheers

i think you need to model this pvc tube within 2 layers in it.
1) Tube layer for pvc, you can look at the material that i added as attachment.
2) Middle layer for fibres,

i tried to make it, you can download the materials for that.
Of course you may need to prepare your texture on PS, specially for thickness of the fibres because of i used the mesh rectangular texture on the KS as opacity map and the thickness has done as you see.
