I use this all the time to just get one corner of a shiny object to look right, then move to another LED light under a cloudy plastic that takes forever to resolve, then I'll turn it off, let the whole scene upres and go get a cup of coffee while it bakes. The more pixels it has to render the slower it goes. Not any perfect solutions, but many ways to work around it. I've got a 2.,5k monitor and I can't imaging going back to a 1080.
