Saving Materials w/Labels

I cannot save a material if I have a label in it. Well, lets say the material saves, but then I change the color of the material and save it as another material (in order to have two different color materials with the same labels). The problem is that the previously saved material takes on the attributes of the newly saved material. If I change the label in one of the materials, it changes in the other material too! This is not about parts being linked with the same material; it's about the materials in the library not being saved as discreetly separate. I've been tearing my hair out about this.
