To Toon or not To Toon?

Hi all;

Most of my medical device work incorporates lots of clear tubing and luer fittings, always a bugger to render, and always confusing to the eye.  Also, my clients all use B/W images for their IFU's and manuals.  SolidWorks drawings are OK, but not great for the purpose.

Toon to the rescue!  This diversion manifold (I can't show the whole device, which is like five feet long and very painful!), but these renders are OK to demonstrate my latest thinking as to illustration vs. photo-rendering.

The first is "basic toon" with shadow multiplier and contour width tweaks.

The storyboard shows the same product in full color, followed by the "colored toon", followed by a Photoshop transparency layer of the colored toon over the full color.  It has a hint of the lines, and the colors are quite clear as to the run.

Tooning is absolutely part of my toolbox now, and my clients love them!

It does look cool though doesn't it - lol, looks like something belonging to a by-pass
