I'm using a mesh material on a cover for a loudspeaker unit.
It now looks like there are two thin layers of mesh instead of one thick one.
Is it possible somehow to have the mesh looking solid?

The short answer is, no, not using that method. To make it look solid, you'd have to model all of those holes. Someone else asked the same question not long ago. You can check that post here:

I managed to delete the inner layer in the geometry editor and fiddled about with the material settings it so it looks a bit thicker.
That would have been my only other suggestion. Going "thinner" by eliminating one of the layers in an effort to look "thicker"or at least not look like a double layer. Using mesh in the opacity as you did, your solution is probably the best you can do. Viewing the model at a distance, you should be fine.
I can't say that this would work, but could one not use displacement geometry for the mesh to make is solid?
