Title: Showreel [October 2016 update]
Post by: Esben Oxholm on November 12, 2015, 09:46:27 AM
The showreel that Magnus posted here a few weeks back: https://www.keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=11281.0 , inspired me to create my own as I think it is a pretty cool way to show of work.
Here it is:

Any feedback is appreciated as I like to think of this showreel as a organic thing that will evolve, improve and update every 2nd month or so.

Best,
Esben.

Thats really good Esben - I like your transitions between clays and renderings. Its so easy to be cheesy when comping these things, but you avoided that completely.

Can I ask what you used to produce this (final cut pro/after effects)?

I knew this would turn out good! +1 on the clay transitions. Other than that, short, sweet and tasty. Love it!

This is just super!  What I really like is that it's "upbeat", something rare in our biz.

Oh, okay... Actually I was a bit unsure, so I went with the polite answer :D

Nice! I hope I'd love to have something similar after I've got enough portfolio pieces to do so. Keep cranking out the good work, sir!

Hi all.
As written in the initial post I wanted my showreel to be organic by improving and updating every 2nd month or so... and here we are. To month after. I've updated the reel with a few new works that I've done. Nothing much, but still worth an update I believe.

Check it out and let me know what you think:

Visually, I think this is is superb. Clean, crisp and engaging.

Personally, I'm not too sure about the choice of music, but that's just personal preferences I guess.

Thank you guys.

Yeah, I hear you on the choice of music, Magnus. I'm not sure about it either. Probably going to change it in the next update. I just wanted something else than the typical overly dramatic cinematic  or electronic sorta house'ish stuff that I think is a bit overused in showreels.
I personally listen mostly to progressive death metal. I know that won't do, but I'm finding it tough to find a style of music that will do well in a showreel that I like very well myself... and is free of copyright as well. Any recommendations are appreciated :)

Hi Esben ... Your local radio station can come in handy at times. They normally receive demo tracks from up n coming acts or people trying to get known. Talk with them, they can be really good name droppers at times :)

Yes, striving for originality can be hard. I actually don't mind the cinematic/electronic cliché's in the showreel genre, but I see your point. That said, the house/electronica genre is very wide in my opinion. I believe you can make it fresh and original even if you end up within this genre. But finding the perfect tune can be extremely time consuming.

Progressive death metal would hit a narrow crowd though;)

Wow, Esben- the January update is awesome!

Now- promise not to laugh...  There are many pieces of classical music that would be appropriate.  There are several riffs in Mozart's 5th Violin Concerto that are spot on for your pace and cadence, and upbeat as well.

Classical music could indeed be nice. Went with something else in the newest update though. I'll keep it in mind for later :)

Thank you all for the very kind comments. Glad you like it.

I would really like your thoughts on what the weakest projects/clips in the portfolio are.
I'm finishing a few new projects at the moment that I want to include in the next update, but would like not to make the showreel much longer.

So what 1-2 projects would you substitute?

A few things that I would do. The product explosion between the watch and the engine is very short, slow it down so you have time to see it more or lose it altogether.  For the lamp shot, I would use the rotating arm first then cut to the bulb,  it helps build up the shot better.   I like that you incorporated the gem stone into the intro, it wasn't as strong just being on its own but works nicely incorporated into the title/intro.  Your reel is only approx 0:47 sec, that is not long at all, I wouldn't be too worried about making it longer. To me the pill bottle is the obvious candidate for substitution, but I would leave it and just add your new stuff ontop of that seeing how its still well under a minute.

Thanks a lot Justin!
Very useful feedback. Much appreciated.

Yeah, I had my doubts about the product explosion as well. I think I'll redo it and make it move a bit slower.

Thanks again.
